Antonio Costa speaks to leaders at the COP28 summit today

Prime Minister António Costa will address the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) Leaders’ Summit in Dubai this Saturday to announce a five million euro fund for “loss and damage”.

Although the amount Portugal will contribute was already announced on Friday, the official announcement will be made today, during the Portuguese head of government’s speech at the World Climate Action Summit, which brings together world leaders in the United Arab Emirates.

The launch of the fund to finance “loss and damage” caused by climate change was approved by some 200 countries on Thursday, the first day of the UN summit.

After already dedicating much of his agenda the day before to financing climate action, Antonio Costa returns to COP28 today, the last of a two-day trip to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, where the summit is taking place.

Following his speech at the Leaders’ Summit, the Prime Minister will attend a roundtable on climate change mitigation.

In the afternoon, in the Portuguese Pavilion, the Executive Director will also speak at the launch of the Portuguese translation of the International Energy Agency’s report on Clean Energy Financing in Africa.

COP28, which began on Wednesday, will end on December 12.
