The UEFA Executive Committee decided this Saturday to reformulate the 2025/26 Women’s Champions League, which will also see the start of a new women’s club competition.
The new women’s Champions League model will mirror the men’s: there will no longer be a group stage, but an 18-team league with each team playing six games, three home and three away, before the knockout stage.
The president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) reacted with “natural enthusiasm” to the creation of the new competition, which does not yet have a name.
“This is an important step towards the development and establishment of women’s football at European level, and therefore also in Portugal,” said Fernando Gomes.
These changes should allow Portugal to have more clubs in European competitions, as opposed to what happens now where only the champion has access to the “Champions” preliminary rounds.
More information about the Champions League and the new competition, as well as the associated format, calendar and access method, will be published on Monday.
The European Women’s Futsal Championship will now be held every four years, with the 2024/25 season canceled and the next championship taking place in 2027, two years after the first World Cup.
