General Luis Araujo, former chief of staff of the Air Force, has died.

This Saturday, the Air Force announced the death of General Luis Evangelista Estevez de Araujo, former Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and former Chief of the General Staff of the Air Force, at the age of 74 years.

General Luis Araujo began his career in the Air Force in 1966. He was born on February 25, 1949 in Porto. In 2011, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, where he remained until he was transferred to the reserve due to age limit in 2014.

During the foreign war he piloted Alouette III helicopters in Mozambique. In June 1998, he commanded a joint force that removed thousands of Portuguese and foreigners from Guinea-Bissau during that country’s political and military crisis.

“Our thoughts are with his family, comrades and friends,” the Air Force said in a statement.
