The driver of a passenger vehicle in an unmarked vehicle (TVDE) was detained by police in connection with the murder of a Nantes fan on Saturday before a French Football League game, authorities in Gallia said this Sunday.
“Continuing the first investigation carried out overnight, the TVDE driver arrived at the Nantes police station at 3:30 am. [hora de Lisboa]and was placed in custody on charges of premeditated murder,” Nantes prosecutor Renaud Godel said in a statement, adding that he was a 35-year-old man.
According to Godel, “shortly before 8 p.m. [19h00 em Lisboa]Several TVDE cars carrying Nice fans were attacked by Nantes fans on the way to the Nantes stadium.
“During these events, in circumstances that are yet to be established, a 31-year-old man, a Nantes fan, lost consciousness” and “died on the spot,” this “despite the rapid intervention of emergency services,” the same source emphasized.
According to the prosecutor, “the first forensic examinations show that the victim has a wound on his back that could be consistent with a sharp weapon,” and according to a witness quoted by the French news agency AFP, the victim belonged to the Loire brigade, a cheerleader.
Local newspaper Presse Océan collected testimony from one of the drivers on the TVDE “train” of Nice fans, who anonymously stated that he had been attacked, but was not a direct witness to the murder.
“We were on the train” [duas carrinhas e seis outros carros] leaving thirty Nice fans in the stadium when a horde of hooded fans dressed in black or yellow-green [as cores do Nantes] appeared and attacked us,” he told the newspaper.
He added: “They started opening the doors and beating my clients inside. I rolled down the window and asked them to stop. A man kicked my door. He came back, hit my windshield (…) And all my other colleagues. were also attacked.”
Nantes and French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera expressed their “pain” and offered their condolences to the family and friends of the late fan, as well as the French Professional Football League (LFP).
Nantes won the match of the 14th round of Ligue 1 against Nice with a score of 1:0 and are in eighth place with 18 points, while their opponents are in second place with 29, which is four points less than leaders Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Les this Sunday. Le Havre, 2-0.
