According to a message published this Monday by the PCP, the former communist leader Jorge Araujo died at the age of 87.
In the note, the communists remember Joaquim Jorge Alves de Araujo, born in Vila Nova de Famalicão in September 1936 and party member since 1957.
Jorge Araujo was a member of the board of the Northern Regional Organization of the PCP from April 1974 to 1976, when he was elected to the Central Committee of the PCP, a body of which he was a member until 1996. member of the Secretariat from 1976 to 1990 and the Political Committee from 1983 to 1992, the note said.
“Arrested for the first time while still a law student in Coimbra in 1958, he spent 12 years of his life in fascist prisons. After a third arrest in 1962, from which he escaped three months later, he went underground in the same state in 1963, he was arrested and convicted, serving ten years in prison,” the communist note also says.
