The EU and UK will resume talks on Gibraltar next week in London

The European Union (EU) and the UK will resume negotiations in London from December 13-14 on “some basic principles” for a future agreement on Gibraltar.

A source at the European body confirmed to Efe on Tuesday that the EU and Britain had “discussed and reached an agreement” to resume negotiations.

As a result of this interaction, the next negotiations are scheduled for “December 13 and 14” and will concern “some of the main pillars of the future agreement,” the same source emphasized.

This new round of negotiations “will take place in London,” he added.

On the EU side, the meeting participants will be responsible for the European Commission.

The future relationship between the EU and Gibraltar is not included in the trade agreement that London and Brussels agreed on Christmas Eve 2020, so there is a need for a separate agreement, negotiated by the European Commission and the British government and which will ultimately require approval from Spain.

Spain and the UK resumed negotiations this Monday in the Spanish city of Malaga to reach an agreement on their post-Brexit relationship with Gibraltar.

The meeting was attended by Spain’s Secretary of State for European Union (EU) Affairs Pascual Navarro and a delegation from the United Kingdom, including Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Garcia, according to authorities in the British colony.

It was a “technical meeting” in line with what was announced by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez after a meeting with the new British Secretary of State, former Prime Minister David Cameron, in Brussels, sources confirmed to EFE. .

On November 28, Albarez and Cameron met at the NATO summit in Brussels, where they held a bilateral meeting where they agreed to resume negotiations on relations with Gibraltar after Brexit.

As Albarez explained before the meeting, Spain and the UK are “very close” to concluding a deal.
