Lisbon Metro suspends quarry talks due to political crisis

The Metropolitano de Lisboa (ML) has suspended negotiations on career rules in light of the current political crisis, union organizations representing workers said on Tuesday, accusing the company of always taking a “very intransigent position.”

At the end of the fourth meeting with the OA board of directors, which took place on Tuesday, the unions announced that the company “has advised that, given the current political situation and the natural difficulties associated with the lack of protective guidelines, it intends to suspend the regulation of trade meetings.”

In a statement, the trade union organizations said that “taking into account this position (…) they agree with the suspension of the negotiation process on this model.”

They also expressed regret over the position expressed by the ML on Tuesday, emphasizing that “throughout all meetings, the company has always maintained a very uncompromising position regarding the proposals presented.”

“We also remember that in the negotiation process there should always be a discussion of the proposals of all interlocutors, which, unfortunately, did not happen in this process,” they emphasized.

The unions emphasized that “the main goal of the company was simply to create a new professional category and try to implement various measures, especially in the control room and energy room, as well as in the training that is provided to workers under outsourcing contracts (cleaning and supervision companies) about important worker safety rules and objects that clearly demonstrate the path to replacing OD workers.”

The trade union organizations also stressed in their statement that “the necessary conditions have not been created for the participation of workers in the extension of the Metropolitano de Lisboa from December 31, 2023 to January 1, 2024.”

The unions representing workers are STRUP (Union of Road and Urban Transport Workers of Portugal), affiliated to FECTRANS, STTM (Union of Traction Transport Workers of the Lisbon Metro), SINDEM (Union of Urban Maintenance Workers), SITRA (Union of Transport Workers), SITESE (Trade Union service workers). Trade Union of Industry Workers) and STMETRO (Trade Union of Lisbon Metro Workers).

The Lisbon Metro operates daily on four lines: yellow (Rato-Odivelas), green (Telheiras-Cais do Sodré), blue (Reboleira-Santa Apolonia) and red (Airport-Sao Sebastian). The metro usually operates from 6:30 to 1:00.
