Antonio Costa claims that he followed the usual referral procedure in the case of the twins being treated in Santa Maria.

The Prime Minister said on Wednesday that his office followed normal referral procedures in the case of Portuguese-Brazilian twins being treated in Lisbon after receiving a communication from the Civil Chamber of the President of the Republic.

“As far as my office is concerned, we have already confirmed that we have received a communication from the Civil Chamber of the President of the Republic, among many others that we have received, and we are doing what we usually do with this file: there is a Forwarding to the competent ministries in connection with the article. The final point,” Antonio Costa told reporters in Porto.

António Costa reported on the case of Portuguese-Brazilian twins being treated at the Santa Maria Hospital in Liboa, at the Casa da Música metro station, after their first ride on the carrier’s new CT scan machines.

Speaking to reporters after leaving the inauguration ceremony, Costa also said, “just to clarify,” that “the necessary investigations are being carried out by the competent authorities.”

“Apparently, the prosecutor’s office, the Minister of Health [Manuel Pizarro] ordered an inspection of the Main Inspectorate of Sanitary Activities. We will wait for this information,” the Prime Minister said.

António Costa is in Porto as part of his Government+Next chief’s latest initiative, which includes holding a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday at Porto City Hall.

The twins’ case was revealed in a TVI report aired in early November, according to which two Portuguese-Brazilian children traveled to Portugal in 2020 to receive the drug Zolgensma, one of the most expensive in the world, to treat spinal conditions. muscle atrophy, the total cost of which was four million euros.

According to TVI, there were suspicions that this happened under the influence of the President of the Republic, who denied any interference in the matter.

On Monday, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said that the correspondence regarding this case began on October 21, 2019, with an email that his son Nuno Rebelo de Souza sent to him, emphasizing that he gave “neutral and equal to what happened in the case” .

He added that there was no “interference by the President of the Republic as to whether he is a son or not,” and the exchange of information with the President ended ten days later, on October 31.

“What happened next, I don’t know, that’s why the PGR is investigating. And I hope, as I said a few days ago, that it will be complete to understand what has happened since he left Belem,” he said. .

The case is being investigated by the General Prosecutor’s Office and the General Inspectorate of Medical Activities (IGAS).
