Two of the three suspects in the murder of a retired National Police (PN) officer in Cape Verde were sentenced to 28 years in prison, according to a verdict read this Wednesday in the Praia court.

Of the three suspects, residents of Achad Grande Tras, who have been in custody since March, two were found guilty and the third was acquitted.

The two main defendants were each sentenced to 28 years in prison, in legal terms: 22 years for the murder of the agent, five years for illegal possession of a weapon and one for the attempted murder of a witness.

The defendants were also ordered to pay compensation to the victim’s family in an amount to be determined by the Praya District Court.

In a conversation with Lusa, the lawyer for the victim’s family, trial assistant David Nunez, said that depending on the type of crime, this is a “fair punishment” and therefore the verdict cannot be appealed.

The three suspects, aged between 28 and 35, were charged with co-offense of aggravated murder with a firearm, injury to physical integrity and possession of a weapon.

The crime occurred on December 16, 2020 in the city of Sao Tome, near the old Praia airport, the victim was a national police officer who had recently retired.

As the Cape Verdean press wrote at the time, the policeman was killed as a result of a robbery.
