Women conducting research in Portugal are more likely to sign scientific papers as first author than men, official statistics showed for the period 2018-2022.
According to the Directorate General of Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC), which today published the report “Portuguese Scientific Production 2018-2022: Gender Indicators”, 53% of first authors of scientific articles are women.
DGEEC is limited to statistics of researchers associated with Portuguese scientific institutions and whose publications (articles, etc.) are indexed in Web of Science databases.
Unlike women, men are mostly the last author (55%), corresponding author (51%) and sole author (58%) of scientific publications.
Men also sign, but in the period 2018-2021. more scientific articles in the fields of engineering and technology (55%) and humanities and arts (51%), and women lead as authors of publications in the fields of medical and health sciences (61%), agricultural and veterinary sciences (59%) and social science (52%).
According to DGEEC, the number of scientific publications with Portuguese authors reached 26,129 in 2018 and 29,639 in 2022.
In 2021, the number of these publications increased to 31,722 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has accelerated the sharing of scientific knowledge to respond to the global health crisis.
