PS finds it incomprehensible that the PSD voted against solidarity with Guterres

The PS found it incomprehensible that the PSD voted against a vote of solidarity with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and another vote in support of the UN call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

In a conversation with Lusa this Friday, the socialist coordinator of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, MP Paulo Pisco, explained that both votes were approved on Thursday at a meeting of this committee by the PS and BE, but the PSD and Chega voted against.

“The PSD vote against is completely incomprehensible in the light of the events we have witnessed,” said Paulo Pisco, who believed that the attack on Antonio Guterres also “weaken the role of the United Nations.”

The vote of solidarity with the United Nations Secretary-General was submitted to BE at the end of October, and in its operative part it demonstrates solidarity with António Guterres “rejecting the attacks he has suffered from Israel” and “emphasizes the need for a ceasefire in the region, access to humanitarian assistance and condemnation of war crimes.”

The vote also calls on Israel “not to deny entry to UN representatives and officials or deny them access to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.”

The second vote, signed by MPs PS and BE and also held at the end of October, expresses solidarity with the UN call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and condemns “absolutely and unequivocally the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas in Israel on October 7.” “

The text affirms that “Hamas’ actions do not justify a response based on the collective punishment of the Palestinian people by Israel” and condemns the “disproportionate use of force carried out by Israel in the Gaza Strip,” endorsing Antonio Guterres, who called for negotiations on an immediate ceasefire and declared the need for “a political solution that guarantees two states.”

“It cannot be denied that there is a huge humanitarian drama that requires a very urgent response,” stressed Paulo Pisco, saying that “it was a big surprise” that the PSD stood against the two votes.

According to the PS MP, “the negative vote shows a huge insensitivity, a huge indifference to the role of the United Nations” in areas such as security, poverty, refugees or democracy.

“The attack on the Secretary-General of the United Nations is not just an attack on the person of António Guterres, it is an attack on the entire United Nations system, it weakens its indispensable role throughout the world, it is completely incomprehensible,” he criticized, considering that Guterres “ has always been guided by humanistic values, conflict resolution and responding to humanitarian dramas.”

The PS will not accept these votes in plenary as they had already been approved by the committee, but reiterates that the “only surprise” was the vote against the SDP, a party that said it did not give “excellent explanations” at the meeting. to justify it.

Lusa tried to contact the PSD coordinator at the Foreign Affairs Commission, Thiago Moreira de Sa, but so far without success.
