The International Energy Agency (IEA) this Sunday estimated that voluntary commitments made at the start of COP28 by more than 100 countries and companies would only cut gas emissions by 30% by 2030.
The 28th UN Climate Change Conference 2023, better known as COP28, takes place from November 30th in Dubai and ends on Tuesday the 12th.
For this assessment, the IEA analyzed the commitments made on 2 December.
This includes a letter signed to date by 52 oil and gas companies to reduce methane leaks in particular, as well as a commitment by 130 countries to triple the use of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency by 2030.
Before COP28, emissions in 2030 will amount to about 38 billion tons of greenhouse gases, according to the agency.
If fully implemented, these two voluntary commitments would reduce these emissions by 30% (4,000 million tons) compared to the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in 2050.
“While the commitments are a positive step in combating greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector, they are far from sufficient to achieve international climate goals, in particular the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C,” the AEI noted in its analysis. .
