Zara regrets ‘misunderstanding’ over new campaign accused of recreating corpses wrapped in shrouds in Gaza

Zara said Tuesday it regretted a “misunderstanding” over an advertising campaign featuring statues draped in white cloth, which prompted calls for a boycott from some pro-Palestinian activists. Many comments stated that the photographs resembled corpses in the Gaza Strip. The company says it has already removed the images.

Zara said the campaign, which also featured limbless mannequins, was conceived in July and photographed in September. The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7. The brand says the purpose of the campaign was to showcase unfinished sculptures in a sculptor’s studio.

“Unfortunately, some customers were offended by these images, which have now been deleted, and saw them as something completely different from what was intended when they were created,” Zara wrote in an Instagram post. According to the fashion brand, the goal of the campaign was to “showcase handmade clothing in an artistic context.”

“Zara regrets this misunderstanding and we reiterate our deep respect for everyone,” Zara said.
