A French frigate patrolling the Red Sea on Monday shot down a “drone” threatening a Norwegian-flagged oil tanker that was attacked by Houthi rebels from Yemen, the French Armed Forces said in a statement on Tuesday.
The French multi-role frigate (FREMM) Languedoc “intercepted and destroyed a ‘drone’ that was directly threatening the Strinde and protected the ship from an attempted hijacking,” the report said.
“Fire on board” [petroleiro] Strinda was under control. No casualties were reported,” the statement further clarified, indicating that the North American destroyer USS Mason “subsequently escorted the Strinda towards the Gulf of Aden, away from the threat zone.”
Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on an oil tanker on Tuesday, saying they were acting in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The US Army announced Monday evening that a missile fired from Houthi-controlled areas struck an oil tanker off the coast of Yemen without causing any casualties. This incident was confirmed by the Norwegian shipowner J. Ludwig Mowinkels Rederi.
The Houthis, like the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and the Lebanese movement Hezbollah, are members of the so-called “axis of resistance” to Israel, backed by Iran.
