Mariana Mortagua criticizes the “election campaign figures” surrounding the parliamentary investigation into the twins case

BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua said this Thursday that it was necessary to wait for the results of the ongoing investigation into the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins before appearing before the commission of inquiry, and criticized the “election campaign figures”.

“I think we must distinguish what is parliamentary action, which leads to a necessary investigation, which reveals to the public an action that has not been investigated in any other way, from election campaign figures, which are intended to take advantage of any political moment,” he ruled.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to a homeless shelter in Lisbon, the BE leader was asked about the announcement by some parties that they would propose at the beginning of the next legislative assembly that a parliamentary committee investigate the children treated at the Santa Maria hospital.

Mariana Mortagua noted that “an investigation is underway” and it is necessary to “know the results.”

“It is necessary to know the results of the investigation and draw conclusions about it, without wanting to turn very serious situations into election figures that call into question equal access to health care,” he said, believing that this “does not help the debate.” in all political debates.”

Mortagua said that “it is important that everything is explained, it is important that checks are carried out, that the competent authorities carry out all investigations.”

The bloc coordinator also noted that “proposals are not transferred from one legislative body to another” and that deputies “make proposals to the legislative body to which they are submitted.”

“I think this is how you separate parliamentary work from the results of the election campaign,” he emphasized.

Chega announced on Wednesday that he would propose setting up a parliamentary commission of inquiry at the start of the next legislature to clarify the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins and whether it was an exceptional situation.

A few hours later, the Liberal Initiative also pledged to propose a parliamentary commission of inquiry in the next legislature if all clarifications were not provided by then.

In November, TVI reported the case of two twin children living in Brazil, who had meanwhile acquired Portuguese citizenship and came to Portugal in 2019 to receive the drug Zolgensma for spinal muscular atrophy, at a total cost of four million euros.

In addition to the internal audit at the Santa Maria Hospital, the case is being investigated by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and the Inspectorate General of Medical Activities (IGAS).

According to the audit report requested by the Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte (CHULN) on the case, known on Wednesday, the first consultation of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins at the Santa Maria Hospital took place on December 5, 2019, when they were Antonio Sales and Jamila Madeira in office. and the children were sent (a request for consultation) by the Minister of Health.

António Lacerda Sales assured the same day that he had not made an appointment at the National Health Service (SNS) for the Portuguese-Brazilian twins, believing that it remained in a “field of suspicion and uncertainty.”

Former Health Minister Marta Temido said she was not aware of the contents of the CHULN audit report into the Portuguese-Brazilian twins case and added that she had not yet been called to testify.
