Outgoing PS Secretary General Antonio Costa will meet on Sunday with his successor, who will be chosen by activists in elections this Friday and Saturday that will be contested by Jose Luis Carneiro, Pedro Nuno Santos and Daniel Adriano.
The meeting of António Costa with the next general secretary of the Socialists, which will take place at the national headquarters of the PS in Lisbon at 12 noon on Sunday, was announced today by the party’s press service.
António Costa will vote for the direct elections of the PS this Friday, at 18:00, in the Federation of Urban Areas of Lisbon (FAUL), returning from Brussels, where, as Prime Minister, he attended the European Council meeting.
In a message he sent this morning to all socialist activists, the PS Secretary General called on them to mobilize in these internal elections and said that the new leader will count on their full solidarity.
“This Friday and Saturday we will elect our new leader. I am confident that the democratic choice of the socialists will give new energy to the PS. Therefore, I encourage everyone to take part in these elections, making this vote a great confirmation of the strength of the PS,” wrote the outgoing Socialist leader.
“The new Secretary General will count on all my solidarity and, of course, on the support of all activists in the pluralistic unity that is the hallmark of our PS,” he added.
Between this Friday and Saturday, some 60 thousand socialist activists will choose a successor to António Costa as secretary general of the Social Democratic Party. Jose Luis Carneiro, Pedro Nuno Santos and Daniel Adriano applied for this position.
The electoral process in the PS began with the resignation of António Costa as Prime Minister on November 7 after it became known that he was the subject of a judicial investigation launched by the Ministry of Justice in the Supreme Court. , as part of Operation Influencer.
In addition to the new party leader, the Socialists will elect 1,400 delegates (to which will be added 1,100 delegates in essence) to the National Congress, which will meet from January 5 to 7 at the Lisbon International Fair.
This Friday, FAUL activists and representatives of the federations of Aveiro, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, Guarda, Leiria, Portalegre, Oeste, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real will vote.
On Saturday, elections will be held in the federations of Algarve, Baixo Alentejo, Braga, Coimbra, Porto, Santarem, Viseu, the Azores and Madeira. Voting will end at 23:00 (tentative time) on Saturday.
The first election results are due to be announced at 23:30 at the PS national headquarters by the President of the Congress Organizing Committee (COC), Pedro do Carmo.
