Single mothers should have access to the sacrament of the sacrament, the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith said in a letter published this week and approved by Pope Francis.
“Women in this situation, who have chosen life and lead a very difficult existence because of this choice, must be encouraged to access the saving and consoling power of the sacraments,” said the document signed by Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, prefect of the Dicastery.
In some countries, as the Holy See criticizes, “both priests and some laity do not allow mothers who have given birth to children out of wedlock to have access to the sacraments and even to baptize their children.” The document approved by the Pope recommends that “pastoral work must be carried out in the local Church so that it is clear that the fact of being a single mother does not hinder access to the Eucharist.”
The Vatican also states that “there are difficult situations that need to be recognized and pastorally managed,” including cases where these women resort to “selling their own bodies in order to feed their families.”
