National Road 222 (EN222) at Kilometer 73 in Santiago de Pihaings, Cinfines, is cut off indefinitely after a land handover that left a hole in the road, a GNR source told Lusa on Wednesday.
“The earthen wall gave way and created a hole in one of the lanes of the road, which forced it to be cut in both directions for security reasons,” a source from the PPR district command in Viseu told Lusa.
According to the City Council of Cinfines, the road “was free on Sunday, January 8 due to bad weather in the direction of Cinfines-Souselo, at kilometer 73, in the place of Ribeira, Santiago de Piains district, and an alternative route passes through the Municipal road 1015 (EM1015).
This municipal road, which connects EN 222 to Santo António and Sanfins, should be used “in Pianes and Valbom, in San Cristovan de Nogueira, in the direction of Socelu/Cinfines and in the opposite direction at the junction of Cinfines/Souselo”.
According to information from the Municipality of Sinfains, in the north of the Viseu district, an on-site meeting between the municipality and Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) will take place on Thursday morning.
IP also announced this Wednesday that the track will be shortened.
“Infraestruturas de Portugal informs that traffic on the EN222 highway was closed on January 8 due to the reduction of the road platform at the 73rd kilometer due to bad weather that took place over the weekend.”
According to the press release, “IP teams have already been on the scene and, given the extent of the damage, it will be necessary to draw up an executive project to restore the road situation.”
“Intervention should include replacement of drainage systems, stabilization of slopes and construction of retaining walls, as well as rehabilitation of the road platform.”
The IP said that “while work is underway, the EN222 route will be turned off at this location and the detour will be on municipal roads with proper signage in place.”
“The IP reports the procedures already carried out by the task force to the municipality of Xinfainx, with the close cooperation between the two organizations being verified. We ask for a better understanding of the inconvenience and inconvenience this situation may cause.” .
