Former President of the Assembly of the Republic and former Socialist leader Ferro Rodriguez said on Tuesday that he was “totally amazed” by Pedro Passos Coelho’s statements, saying he considered him a “democrat and a progressive man.”
“I think that anything that erodes the image of extremist forces and ideas, ideas against democracy, against the welfare state, against freedom, should not be tolerated and should not come from a man who was prime minister, of whom he was president. The JSD, considered democratic and progressive, I was completely amazed by this,” Ferro Rodrigues said on the sidelines of the presentation of his book “This is how I see my life” in Porto.
The former President of Parliament also considered “very serious” the statements of Passos Coelho, who this morning upon arrival at the Justice Campus in Lisbon admitted that now is not his time to intervene in the political space and expressed the hope that the PSD can prepare to become “a leader in this new stage “
Stressing that it will be necessary to have a government “that can inspire the trust of the people,” Passos Coelho said he believes that the Social Democrats will win the elections on March 10: “I obviously hope that the PSD can become the leading party in this new phase. which will open, not because it is my party – I think everyone will understand that I wanted my party to win the elections – and I believe that yes, this will happen.”
On the other hand, Passos Coelho also expressed the hope that “the country will be able to identify in the current government that is leaving office a serious commitment to the situation in which the country finds itself.”
“So serious that the Prime Minister was the only one I remember who felt the need to resign because of indecent and bad appearance,” the former government official also emphasized.
Ferro Rodrigues also told reporters that “the rule of law in Portugal is under threat,” referring in particular to “reactionary forces that are gaining strength.”
“This is a serious situation and Portugal cannot escape it, and if there is help from people with great power and responsibility for this far-right force and emergency, there will be many risks in Portugal,” he said.
Asked about the state of the justice system and whether the ministry was “above and beyond everything,” Ferro Rodriguez said he had the feeling that “there really are a lot of obscene things in Portugal.”
“The obscene thing about Portugal is that there was a paragraph written by the attorney general dismissing a prime minister who was freely chosen by the Portuguese,” he said.
