This Thursday, the Coimbra court sentenced Aprigio Santos, former naval administrator, to two years’ probation for tax abuses.
The crimes date back to 2013. It was a matter of non-payment of VAT and the IRS, which led to state losses of more than 860 thousand euros.
The court also ordered the Figueira da Foz football club to pay 24 thousand euros. The company declared insolvency, but Naval continues to exist.
During the announcement of the decision, the chairman of the panel of judges emphasized that it had been proven that, despite the fact that he was ill and therefore no longer absent from the activities of Naval SAD, Aprigio Santos continued to have a voice of command.
From the testimony in court, as well as from what witnesses heard throughout the trial, “his dynamic” and “commanding” position was clear.
The court understood that the defendant was not completely unaware of Naval’s sporting and tax obligations, as well as the company’s strategic principles.
The Coimbra court also decided to acquit Aprigio Santos in another attached case, in which he was also accused of breach of financial trust in relation to the Haute Fashion company.
In the Haute Fashion case, the court found that the company was “a kind of entertainment center” for Aprigio Santos’ wife, in which he had no real decision-making authority.
