SDS-PP President and Member of the European Parliament Nuno Melo said this Friday that he will join the lists of parliamentary candidates in a coalition with the PSD, and postponed the announcement of candidates for the European elections until after the legislative elections.
“I have not made a single invitation to the lists, with the exception, perhaps, of myself, since I will be a candidate in the legislative elections,” the centrist leader said in an interview with SIC Notícias, without, however, specifying from which circle he would run. candidate and where on the list.
Regarding the candidates for the European elections in June, Nuno Melo noted that “from March 11th,” the day after the legislative elections, he “will be able to say who the candidate will be.”
The SDS and SDS-PP announced on Thursday that they would propose to their parties’ national bodies an electoral coalition, the Democratic Alliance (AD), for legislative elections in March and European elections in June, which would also include “independent individuals”.
In this interview, the president of the SDS-PP stated that this is “an agreement that is certainly good for the SDP and the SDS”, but refused to give more specific details, saying that “relations between parties have rules” and coalitions, however, he must be ratified by the bodies of both political forces.
“This is more than accounting, this is a national project,” he stressed, arguing that this is a “stable, trustworthy” and “the only alternative solution” to PS.
One question the MEP did not answer was how many names from the CDS-PP would be eligible, saying only that the party “will have more MPs the more votes the coalition has”.
Nuno Melo noted that the goal of the Democratic Alliance is “to win elections and be able to form a government.”
“It would be great if the SDP and SDS got an absolute majority. If that doesn’t happen, we’ll soon see what might happen the day after the election, he added.
Nuno Melo stressed that PSD President Luis Montenegro “made it very clear that he will not enter into an agreement with Chega, he will not be with Chega in the government,” but believed that the Liberal Initiative “can help” form a majority. on right.
And he even said he “wish IL had been in this AD from the start”, arguing that “the three parties together would have a better chance” of winning more seats and eventually achieving an outright majority by taking advantage of the distribution votes seats in parliament on election day.
The CDS-PP President said that this coalition “arrives at a possible and appropriate time” because “major political projects cannot be born on the basis of sedimentation” and reiterated that the CDS-PP is ready to go to the vote alone if this agreement does not was achieved in advance.
Noting that AD “is a registered trademark” and “it is undated, it is valid for both the 20th century and the 21st century,” Melo argued that “it is current” and “makes sense for what is at stake.” “.
Nuno Melo also said he would “obviously” campaign with PSD leader Luis Montenegro as the coalition “has no role” and hoped party figures such as Paulo Portas could also be involved.
Portugal will hold early legislative elections on March 10, 2024, planned by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, following the resignation of Prime Minister António Costa on November 7, which was the subject of an investigation by the Portuguese Ministry of State. Supreme Court Court.
The election campaign for legislative elections will take place from February 25 to March 8.
