BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua this Saturday issued a “proclamation against war” in the Middle East as a Christmas message and called for “peace against limitless suffering,” vowing to fight for recognition of a Palestinian state with the next government.
In a Christmas message accessed by Lusa, Mariana Mortagua, for the first time as leader of the bloc, did not mention the national political crisis and early elections and focused on the conflict in the Middle East.
“The Christmas message I leave with you is therefore a call against war, for the immediate humanitarian ceasefire that António Guterres demands every day, a call for solidarity, a commitment to the Bloc to recognize a Palestinian state in the next government,” it said. Video.
The BE leader’s words sound like “peace against limitless suffering” and he declares that “there will be no Christmas celebrations in the city of Belem this year.”
“Instead of celebration, here is a city of mourning, sadness and pain under the specter of hunger. In a city where Christian tradition believes that Jesus was born, the worst Christmas of all time will be lived in silence by so many children who are pulled daily from the rubble of Gaza,” he laments.
Recalling that “20 thousand people have already been killed in Palestine,” Mariana Mortagua also recalls that hospitals have been destroyed, there is no medicine, water or food, and in Gaza “two and a half million people are trapped between the walls.”
“Without the support of the world’s greatest power, does anyone believe this would have been possible? The war in the Middle East, which is added to the war that was already in Ukraine after the Russian invasion, is based on a lie: that there is a military solution to the conflict in Palestine,” he criticizes.
According to the BE coordinator, what is happening “is a genocide that belittles evil” and violates UN decisions.
“Israel signed the Oslo agreement almost 30 years ago and did not implement it. Settlements were created on territory that was promised to the West Bank,” he condemns.
