Portugal shows signs of difficulty in providing a “decent life” for its citizens

The Patriarch of Lisbon warned this Sunday about news of rising poverty and the difficulties of the Portuguese, considering them “signs of a country that is hardly able to cope with the task of providing its citizens with a decent life.”

In his first Christmas message as Patriarch of Lisbon, published this evening on the RTP channel, Rui Valeriu said that “news about the increase in poverty, about the number of families who find it increasingly difficult to meet basic needs in their daily work are signs of a country that is hardly able fulfill the task of providing a decent life for its citizens.”

The titular bishop also lamented the country’s apparent failure to “provide adequate health care and housing; decent education, where there are teachers and conditions for teaching and learning, in short, opening up future prospects for everyone.” Patriarchate from Lisbon.
