In 2023, there were 166 bullfighting shows held in arenas on mainland Portugal. This is the lowest figure in history, excluding the years marked by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The data was published in the Inspectorate General of Cultural Activities (IGAC) report on bullfighting activities for 2023.
According to the IGAC report, 166 bullfights were recorded this year out of 182 that were licensed. 16 performances were canceled or did not take place due to meteorological reasons.
Vila Franca de Xira was the municipality with the largest number of bullfighting shows held (12), followed by the municipalities of Moura (8), Alcochete and Moita (7) and Évora (6).
The figures show a decrease compared to 2022 and the years before the pandemic and quarantine. In 2014, 221 bullfighting shows were recorded.
