Prosecutors (MP) Julia Henriques and Claudia Porto demanded sentences close to or equal to the maximum (25 years) for two Iraqi brothers who were tried in Lisbon for war crimes and membership in the terrorist organization Daesh.
In their final statements at the Justice Campus in Lisbon, parliament representatives believe that there is “documentary, expert and witness evidence” to convict Ammar and Yasser Amin exactly as charged. In addition to joining a terrorist organization, the two brothers are responsible for 17 war crimes and one count of resistance and coercion.
López Guerreiro, the Iraqi lawyer imprisoned at Monsanto prison in Lisbon, is demanding acquittal. “The testimony of witnesses of future memory is, perhaps, the only evidence supporting the accusation. However, they are contradictory. If in doubt, you should justify yourself,” he believed. The announcement of the decision is scheduled for January 18.
