Liz Truss’ aides, advisers and supporters praise the sacking

Liz Truss’ resignation letters have finally been released, nine months after they were first submitted. They proved controversial, with Ms Truss only serving 49 days in office, the shortest tenure for a female prime minister. Here are the 11 people she mentioned:

Matthew Elliott – CEO of the Vote Leave campaign, which won the 2016 EU referendum and led to Brexit.

John Moynihan – A Brexiteer who sat on the board of Vote Leave and was also chair and fundraiser for Liz Truss’ Conservative leadership campaign in 2022, which criticized the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) in the run-up to the mini-budget.

Ruth Porter – A long-time staffer who worked with Ms Truss when she gave her infamous “cheese” speech at the 2014 Conservative Party conference as Environment Secretary. Also worked for Ms Truss when she was Justice Secretary and Prime Minister.

Sororities

Shirley Conran – Author of stunning works such as the 1980s bestseller Lace, journalist who launched the Women’s Mail section of the Daily Mail, and most recently founder of the Maths Anxiety Trust.

Jackie Doyle Price – A former industry minister who was an early backer of Ms Truss’s leadership bid in 2022.

Chivalry

Alec Shelbrook – A former defense secretary and a low-key but important figure in Ms Truss’s leadership campaign as he counted every ballot during the Tory battle.

Sophie Jarvis – A long-time special adviser to Ms Truss, serving alongside her as Trade Secretary, Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister from 2019 to 2022.

Shabbir Merali – A lesser-known economic adviser who served alongside Ms Truss in all three positions for an even longer period, starting in 2018, and also Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

Rob Butler “She was only elected MP for Aylesbury in 2019 and quickly rose through the ranks of her government while working at the Foreign Office as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Ms Truss and then as Prisons Secretary.

Suzanne Webb – Another “2019” was the PCA against Ms Truss when she was Prime Minister.
