Brazilian racer Gil de Ferran died of a heart attack during the competition

Brazilian driver Gil de Ferran, winner of the 2003 Indianapolis 500, died Friday of a heart attack while competing at the Concours Club in Opa-locka, Florida.

Gil de Ferran, 56, holder of the CART series speed record with a lap speed of 241.428 miles (388.54 kilometers) per hour, was competing accompanied by his youngest son, Luke, when he stopped the car, saying who felt unwell, was taken to the hospital, but eventually died.

Born on 11 November 1967 in Paris but a naturalized Brazilian, Gil de Ferran was currently a consultant for the McLaren team, having started his career in British Formula 3 and then winning seven CART races and five IndyCar races in the US. between 1995 and 2003.

Ferrand won two CART titles in 2000 and 2001 and 50 podiums as a driver for Team Penske, with his greatest achievement coming in 2003 when he won the Indianapolis 500, which was his fourth and final appearance in the final race. in which he beat his compatriot and teammate Hélio Castroneves at the finish line.

“Indycar is deeply saddened by the death of two-time champion and racing legend Gil de Ferran,” Formula Indycar said in a statement, accompanied by a photo of his triumph at Indianapolis.
