According to preliminary data from Operation Christmas and New Year 2023/2024 released this Monday, the GNR recorded 540 accidents in the last three days, resulting in three deaths, twelve serious injuries and 112 minor injuries.
The deaths were the result of a collision on Saturday in Castro Verde, Beja, a car crash on Sunday on Highway 23 (A23) in Vila Velha de Rodao and a collision on the same day in Vila. Franca de Shira, Lisbon.
According to the GNR, the victims were three men aged 76, 24 and 53 years old respectively.
Between 12:00 a.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, PNR troopers checked 24,629 drivers, of which 185 were driving under the influence of alcohol, of which 107 were arrested for driving with a high blood alcohol content. y is equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l (maximum 0.5 g/l).
74 people were also arrested for driving without a legal license, the National Republican Guard said in a statement.
Of the 5,999 traffic violations identified, GNR allocated 1,474 for speeding, 78 for alcohol abuse, and 239 for failure to wear or improperly use a seat belt and/or car seat.
The data also shows that 149 administrative offenses occurred due to the improper use of a mobile phone while driving, 579 due to the lack of mandatory periodic technical inspection and 240 due to the lack of mandatory liability insurance.
During the operation, the PNP will continue to prioritize enforcement of drink and drug driving, speeding and mobile phone misuse.
Proper use of seat belts and child seats, lack of mandatory periodic inspection and mandatory liability insurance, as well as improper execution of overtaking, changing directions and giving way maneuvers are other situations in which military personnel will be careful during inspection actions.
