According to data released this Monday by Operation Party in Safety 2023/2024, some 5,400 drivers were checked in the last three days by the PSP, which detained 81 people for drunk driving and 59 people for not having a driving license.
In total, the Public Security Police (PSP) detained 269 people between Friday and Sunday in its area of responsibility on the Portuguese mainland and throughout the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores.
In addition to 140 arrests for road crimes, police detained 40 people on suspicion of drug trafficking and 17 for property crimes (fraud, theft and robbery), the PSP National Directorate said in a statement.
More than 2,206 individual drug units, five firearms and 14 bladed weapons were also seized, either as a precaution or following nine arrests made for possession of prohibited weapons, according to the data.
In terms of road checks, PSP checked 5,387 drivers throughout the country and monitored 13,300 vehicles using radar, of which 85 were speeding.
A total of 1,095 administrative offenses were recorded, of which 65 were for driving while intoxicated, 87 for lack of mandatory periodic technical inspection, 34 for lack of civil liability insurance and 18 for using a mobile phone while driving.
In terms of road traffic accidents, the PSP recorded 344 accidents, resulting in 93 minor injuries and three serious injuries, with no fatalities.
“On this day, traditionally marked by several homecomings, PSP continues to encourage all drivers to drive safely by adapting their driving to weather and road conditions,” the statement said.
It also asks motorists to moderate their speed, remembering that “driving at excessive speeds and under the influence of alcohol are the main causes of road accidents, as well as driver distracting behaviour, namely the use of a mobile phone.”
PSP also encourages drivers not to make sudden maneuvers and to signal any direction changes in advance.
