The former leader of the PCP parliament, João Oliveira, said this Monday that the New Year’s message of the President of the Republic highlights “the problems that the country faces”, saying that policies need to change.
“Message from the President of the Republic [Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa] Essentially, it is a message of awareness of the problems the country faces. The President of the Republic decided to highlight the identification of this list of problems that affect the lives of the Portuguese,” the communist leader emphasized.
According to the leader of the party’s list for the European Parliament elections in June 2024, it remains to add that “policies must be changed to guarantee respect for the Constitution.”
According to Joao Oliveira, it is necessary to consolidate higher wages and pensions, access to healthcare and strengthening of the National Health Service (SNS), access to housing and increasing the value of public schools.
“This is an alternative policy that the country needs, which finds in the Constitution a reference to its implementation (…). It is in the hands of the Portuguese to create the conditions for its implementation, but it also has a great responsibility on the part of the President of the Republic, who has sworn to respect and enforce the Constitution,” he stressed.
João Oliveira also called the March 10 legislative elections “a moment of clarity and opportunity” for the Portuguese.
“Elections don’t change everything, but they can create the conditions for change,” he added.
The President of the Republic said this Monday that 2024 will be even more decisive than 2023 and called on the Portuguese to participate in the electoral processes, stressing that the country will be what the voters want.
These positions were outlined by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in his traditional New Year’s message in a situation of political crisis, with the government in control and early legislative elections scheduled for March 10.
In his seventh New Year’s message (he did not deliver it in 2021 because he was re-candidate for the presidential elections that year), broadcast live from the Sala das Bicas Palacio de Belem in Lisbon, the head of state hinted at resignation António Costa resigned as prime minister on November 7.
