Six died on the roads on New Year’s Eve

During the New Year period (from December 29), at least six people died on Portuguese roads, all in the PPR jurisdiction. These casualties are in addition to the 18 that occurred in the PSP and GNR areas during the Christmas period – December 15 to 26. Special inspections for the holiday ended on Tuesday.

The New Year’s deaths included a 76-year-old cyclist in Castro Verde; 24-year-old man in Vila Velha de Rodao; 53-year-old man in Vila Franca de Xira; 34-year-old motorcyclist in Fail, Viseu; and a 47-year-old woman from Sure. The sixth fatality is a woman who succumbed to injuries in an accident in Rio Mayor and later died in hospital – the same had already happened to another victim over the Christmas period, when the PSP and GNR counted 17 deaths as they did not include deaths through 24 hours in hospitals.

Over Christmas and New Year (data from Tuesday is not yet available) there were 101 serious injuries and 1,686 minor injuries. There were 1,093 drunk driving arrests: 68 in one day. And 9,345 people were caught speeding: 24 per hour.
