103 people were killed and 170 injured this Wednesday in explosions near a cemetery in the city of Kerman, Iran, where a ceremony was being held to mark the death of General Qasem Soleimani, killed in 2020 in a US drone attack.
Iranian state television reported a first and then a second explosion during a commemorative event at the cemetery where Soleimani is buried. According to Iranian authorities cited by Reuters, the explosions were terrorist attacks, but no group claimed responsibility.
“Despite all the protective and security measures, a terrible noise was heard. We are still investigating,” said Reza Fallah, head of the Kerman Red Crescent Society, as quoted by the news agency.
Iran declared a day of national mourning on Thursday.
