This Thursday, the PSD National Council is expected to approve a coalition with CDS-PP and PPM for legislative and European elections, but without the terms of a political agreement between the three parties, tasking Secretary General Hugo Soares with negotiating it.
According to the proposal of the National Political Commission (CPN), to which Lusa had access, the party’s national councilors, who will meet this Thursday evening in Braga, will be asked to approve “the candidacy for the legislative elections of March 10, 2024.” and European elections on June 9, 2024 in an electoral coalition, on joint lists with CDS-PP and PPM.”
The National Council must also “approve the opening of these lists to include independent citizens of recognized merit, belonging to various sectors of civil society and committed to the political project of the Democratic Alliance,” as the coalition itself is called, as well as its acronym and logos.
The last point of the leadership proposal, signed by PSD President Luis Montenegro, states that the National Council should “instruct the Secretary General to negotiate the terms of the political agreement and ratify the electoral coalition with the Constitutional Court, the Ministry of Internal Administration and other legal procedures.”
The PSD and CDS-PP will meet this Thursday with the national councils of the two parties to approve the constitution of the electoral coalition of the Democratic Alliance, which will also include the PPM, which will participate in the next legislative and European elections.
The meetings of these two highest bodies between the congresses will take place simultaneously: the PSD meeting in Braga and the SDS-NP meeting in Lisbon, both starting at 21:00.
According to coalition sources, the CDS-PP has two eligible seats, one on the list from Lisbon and the other from Porto, but may be able to elect two more deputies in these circles if the result is better compared to the last legislative elections.
It will not be easy for PPM to be elected in Lisbon’s list, 21st.
New meetings of the National Council of both parties are scheduled for January 15 to approve lists of parliamentary candidates, which must be submitted by January 29.
The PSD and SDS-PP announced on December 21 last year that they will compete in the legislative elections in March and the European elections in June with an electoral coalition that is reclaiming the name Democratic Alliance (the name of the first coalitions concluded between the SDS-PP). and SDS-PP in the 80s) and which will include “independent individuals”.
On Wednesday it was announced that the PPM will also join this electoral coalition, already approved by the party organs.
This is the fourth time that the PSD and CDS-PP will vote together in legislative elections.
At the time of the announcement, in a joint statement, the SDP and SDS-PP indicated that they would value and welcome, among other things, the ideas of the “Manifesto of a Reformist and Moderate Alternative,” signed by “more than 100 prominent figures.” from Portuguese society” to support a possible new leader led by the Social Democrats and their president Luis Montenegro.
AD “offers to offer the Portuguese effective political and policy change,” promising “much more ambition for high levels of prosperity, economic and income growth, and opportunity for all Portuguese.”
