PAN demands an explanation from the Finance Minister in Parliament regarding IMI on dams

PAN will propose to hear the Minister of Finance in Parliament so that Fernando Medina can explain to MPs the news that the Tax Administration has allowed the loss of the right to charge IMI for dams.

“PAN will urgently request these two hearings of Fernando Medina and the Director General of the Tax Administration, because they cannot hide behind an absolute majority in a process of expiration that is absolutely incomprehensible and which would even have been overcome if the PAN initiative had been approved here , in the Assembly of the Republic, so that the government could facilitate and guarantee the collection of these amounts, which was rejected by votes against the PS and the Liberal Initiative,” said the only deputy.

Speaking to reporters in Parliament, Ines de Souza Real said that she will present the request for a hearing this Thursday and stated that “The Assembly, even if it is dissolved, will still be able, through the Standing Committee, not only to use its powers and urgently facilitate this hearing.”

Noting that parliament is “working at full capacity” until the 15th, the MP stressed that “PAN will use all the powers it has to ensure that this issue is thoroughly considered.”

Ines de Souza Real said that Fernando Medina should give clarification on this issue, hoping that the hearing, if approved, would take place before the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic, and stressed that the minister “cannot resort to hearings that have already taken place with the Secretary of State, because not only was the necessary clarification regarding this process not provided, but the consequence was the termination of the process and the collection of 2.2 billion euros.”

A representative of the People-Animals-Nature party referred to news published by the NIC, which stated that the Tax and Customs Authority has allowed the right to collect municipal property tax (IMI) for 2019 to expire on more than 160 dams in the country.

The lawmaker said Medina “must explain why the political authorities did not follow up this accusation with a different degree of intimacy” and wants to know “whether an investigation is being opened to investigate possible disciplinary and even financial liability arising from the expiration.”

Ines de Souza Real rejected this situation and noted that “it was the population that really suffered.”

Speaking about the abolition of zero VAT on food, the only PAN MP believes that “it makes no sense for the government to abandon measures to support families, and then, on the other hand, not tax and not cover the public money that is needed to support, e.g. , measures such as the basic food basket.”

“We have found that the IRS is again a powerful machine over the weakest, which easily holds the taxpayer and citizen accountable for any omission or error, but which then, in the case of the strongest and largest economic groups, ultimately proves ineffective. have firm control and collect what is due and money that would be urgently needed to intervene in areas such as health, education, public transport or even, in this particular case, which would be a contribution to the life of the population, especially to reduce regional and social an asymmetry that still persists in our country,” he criticized.

Also in a statement to journalists in parliament, Livre’s sole deputy, Rui Tavares, considered it “unacceptable that this value is being lost” and said that responsibility should be determined “at the political level, but also, if necessary, at the judicial level, the fact that the timing of the IMI collection due for dams in the country have expired.
