At least 18 people were killed in road accidents in Mozambique during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, six fewer than in the previous holiday period, an official source said Thursday.
“We recorded 16 cases of road traffic accidents, resulting in 18 deaths,” said Alcides Macukule, director of the National Institute of Road Transport Inspectorate (INATRO), as quoted by Mozambique Television.
According to him, preliminary data indicates a decrease in the number of road accident deaths this festive season compared to the previous festive period 2022/2023, which recorded 24 deaths from 19 road accidents.
“The most important fact is that this holiday season there were no major accidents, as has happened in other years, involving passenger vehicles in which more than five people died,” added Alcides Makukule.
The same official pointed out that vehicle speed controls contributed to a reduction in the number of accidents and deaths, despite the fact that drivers of private vehicles “drank a lot of alcohol.”
Some organizations rate the level of road traffic accidents in Mozambique as high.
Mozambican authorities have pointed to speeding and drunk driving as the main causes of the accidents.
On average, at least a thousand people die on the country’s roads every year, according to data provided to Lusa by the Mozambican Association for the Assistance of Victims of Road Safety.
