Socialist Manuel Alegre assured this Saturday during a speech at the 24th Congress of the Socialist Party that “no one will dissolve the Socialist Party.”
The writer and former presidential candidate said the Socialists were interrupted “against their will” but left a warning: “The Assembly of the Republic may be dissolved” but the party “is not dissolved.”
The historical socialist believed that the dissolution of parliament – a decision by the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa following the resignation of Prime Minister António Costa on November 7 – “was a reckless mistake that created uncertainty.”
At the time of his intervention, the anti-fascist resistance left several warnings about the current state of democracy in Europe and the world, saying that we were living in a “difficult period” and that “the threat comes from within democracy itself.”
“The ability to react and the spirit of resilience, never turn away from the fight. Do not count on us in maneuvers to whitewash or lure enemies into a trap, Chega will not pass,” he said.
Manuel Alegre also stated that “the goal is not just to form a government, but to save democracy.”
“The enemies of democracy will not pass, we will fight for victory without fear, without complexes. Our flag is not on the ground, it stands,” he concluded.
