This Tuesday, the Lisbon City Council activated a contingency plan for people left homeless due to the cold weather in the city, and the Metropolitano will open three stations overnight, the municipality announced.
Activation of the plan involves the opening of the municipal pavilion Casal Vistoso, where hot meals, food and warm clothing will be served, the municipality said in a statement.
According to Lisbon City Council, street technical teams will “direct homeless people to the Casal Vistoso municipal pavilion.”
The pavilion will also house the Integrated Homeless Support Facility, which is integrated and controlled by multiple agencies.
According to the municipality, Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas (PSD) will be at the Casal Vistoso Municipal Pavilion on Tuesday afternoon.
In addition to the opening of the pavilion, Metropolitano do Rossio, Santa Apolónia and Oriente stations will also be open to homeless people from 11:00 pm to 6:30 am.
According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the mass of polar air has led to below-normal temperatures this season.
Late on Wednesday, IPMA said, “a mass of continental polar air originating from the Scandinavian region will gradually invade the north of the Iberian Peninsula and then the south, leading to a further drop in temperatures, especially a low” on Thursday.
“So on the 11th, minimum temperatures are expected to range from -5 to 0°C in the north and central interior, from 1 to 5°C in the south and on the north and central coast and up to 8°C on the south coast.” , – the message says.
