Internal Administration Minister (MAI) José Luis Carneiro said on Tuesday that an increase of up to 20% in the remuneration of security forces is expected by 2026.
“We have 2,069 million euros for 2024, which means an increase of 20% between 2023 and 2026 in the remuneration conditions of the security forces. (…) We appreciate premiums. We paid 118 million euros, which were not paid. the period of financial assistance to the country is from 2020 to 2023,” he emphasized.
In a conversation with reporters, MAI representatives emphasized the government’s efforts to increase salaries for all security forces in the country. He assured that he is “on the side of the police” and is working to improve working conditions.
Asked about the allowance given to members of the Judicial Police, which has been the subject of controversy, José Luis Carneiro said that there are already allowances for PSP and GNR and that there is a “will” to improve the situation.
“We want and have the desire to improve wage conditions,” he assured, also explaining that “it is impossible to do everything at the same time.”
The government official also said that he was monitoring the protests by the PSP and PNP, who have been speaking before the Assembly of the Republic for the past two days, demanding better working conditions and condemning “injustice” regarding the treatment of the PS. .
Regarding the protests, the minister said that “under no circumstances will the security and mission of the security forces continue to carry out their functional duties throughout the country be jeopardized.”
Considering the right to demonstrate as legitimate, José Luis Carneiro noted that between 2015 and 2024 the socialist executive increased investments in human resources of the PSP and GNR by 426 million euros.
The Minister of Internal Administration also noted that investments of 607 million euros are being made to improve infrastructure and equipment, pointing out that a government tender is being held for more than 30 million euros for the purchase of more than 700 new vehicles.
“We don’t write on a blank sheet of paper, that is, we write on a sheet that makes a profit. (…) This is a guarantee that I can leave, a guarantee that we want and have the desire to continue to improve the conditions of pay for agents and elements that make up the security forces,” he concluded.
