The PS moved the meeting of its National Commission from Lisbon to Coimbra, where the Secretariat, the governing body led by Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos and the Political Commission will be elected on Saturday.
The meeting of the new National Commission, elected last Sunday at the congress, was originally scheduled to take place in the Parque des Nations in Lisbon, but, according to a socialist source, on Tuesday evening it was decided to move it to Coimbra, where the start is scheduled for 10:30 on Saturday.
According to a call signed by the party’s chairman, Carlos César, Pedro Nuno Santos’ speech during the political analysis phase will be open to the media and scheduled for 11:10.
Five minutes earlier, according to the agenda, voting will open “via a digital system via mobile phone for the National Political Commission and the National Secretariat, which will last for two hours.”
The composition of the PS National Commission was agreed upon between Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos and the losing candidates in the Socialist leadership race in direct internal elections on December 15 and 16: Interior Minister José Luis. Carneiro and manager Daniel Adrian. According to this agreement, José Luis Carneiro appointed 35% of the 251 members of this body, and Daniel Adrian four members.
As for the Political Commission of the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, José Luis Carneiro and Daniel Adrian agreed on the same percentage of distribution when allocating the 65 effective seats in this body, so there will again be a single list of candidates on Saturday.
The party leader is responsible for forming the team of the PS National Secretariat, the executive body of this party.
Unlike what has happened since 2016 in the PS, according to a socialist source, this time the Standing Committee will not be elected to the position of deputy secretary. Since the party leader is not the prime minister or even a member of the government, the existence of a standing committee coordinated by the deputy secretary general is considered unnecessary.
Pedro Nuno Santos’ team has already announced that current Deputy Secretary General João Torres will be the Social Democratic Party’s campaign manager for the next legislative elections.
