The President of the Republic promulgated this Wednesday a new regulation of the legal regime for the entry, stay, exit and expulsion of foreign citizens from the territory of the country, a measure that will facilitate requests for family reunification.
The government diploma, which Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has now made public, includes changes to the Regulation of the Aliens Law, adapting it to the restructuring of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) and “moves towards the modernization and simplification of administrative procedures.” At the same time, “processes related to the stay of foreign citizens on national territory can be carried out in a timely manner and with increased security requirements,” says the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA).
In response to Lusa, AIMA points out that these changes are “an assumption of the institution’s digital services portal”, which will soon be launched through “residence permit applications for family reunification.”
“In the coming days after the entry into force of this normative document, there will be news on this matter,” says the institution that combined part of the functions of the disappeared SEF and the High Commission for Migration (ACM).
Established on October 29, 2023, AIMA has inherited 347 thousand cases to date and the priority will be to resolve family reunification cases by the end of the year, which has not been achieved.
“We intend for the new Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum to have a new paradigm that focuses on what should be digitalization, more efficiency and more human resources,” Deputy Minister and Parliamentary Deputy Minister Ana Catarina then explained to Lusa. Mendes, emphasizing that the goal is “not only to improve technological services, but also to respond more easily to the needs of citizens.”
“Issues of family reunification are absolutely necessary,” the minister emphasized.
In the first quarter of 2024, it was planned to launch actions to resolve pending cases together with municipalities and local immigration support offices, devoting more resources to resolving existing cases.
