The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has extended the yellow warning for eight mainland districts until Thursday due to a cold weather forecast, and for the remaining 10 districts until Wednesday.
Thus, the areas of Bragança, Viseu, Evora, Guarda, Vila Real, Beja, Castelo Branco and Portalegre will be under yellow warning until 06:00 am Thursday due to the maintenance of low minimum temperatures.
Until 07:00 on Wednesday, the areas of Porto, Faro, Setubal, Santarem, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga remain under yellow warning due to cold weather.
A yellow alert, the third least severe, is issued by IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain weather-dependent activities.
The cold weather, which should persist through the end of the week, is caused by an anticyclone located in northern Europe extending as a ridge to the Atlantic, carrying “a cold continental air mass for the Iberian Peninsula”, according to IPMA. .
This Monday, the minimum temperature should range from around 0º to 5º degrees Celsius, being lower in the north and center inland where it will drop to between 0 and -6º degrees.
The maximum temperature will also drop: 10 to 15 degrees are expected throughout the territory, and 5 to 10 degrees in the north and center.
Due to the meteorological situation, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Administration (ANEPC) warned of potential risks, namely “poisoning by inhaled gases due to inadequate ventilation in homes where heating such as fireplaces and braziers are used”, as well as fires . y due to “improper use of fireplaces and braziers or faulty electrical circuits.”
