IL leader says young emigration shows the need to transform the country

The President of the Liberal Initiative (IL), Rui Rocha, said this Friday that the data that 30% of young people born in Portugal have emigrated shows the need to transform a country that, according to him, is locked down and stagnant.

“I believe that these statistics, if there were any doubt, speak well of the need to transform the country from March 10th. We cannot continue to live with a blocked country, a stagnant country in which we systematically have one in three young people leaving Portugal,” said Rui Rocha, speaking in Vila Real, before a meeting with young people from the Youth Academy.

The Emigration Observatory, published this Friday, estimates that more than 850,000 young people aged 15 to 39 have left the country and are currently living abroad.

The IL leader also said that, according to the same data, “60% of those who returned admit that they left” the country again.

“So this is the latest example, the final example of how we are not creating opportunities for young people in Portugal,” he stressed.

And he specified that IL, with its “measures aimed at economic growth, at increasing opportunities, at raising wages and reducing taxes, so that at the end of the month there is more money in the pockets of the Portuguese, with very specific measures in housing, such as exemptions from IMT (municipal tax on expensive property transfers) for the acquisition of permanent housing, it is the party that offers solutions for the country, but solutions primarily for young people.”

“Because politics and the country cannot be done without thinking and focusing on the future, and the future is young people,” he emphasized.

Rui Rocha said that the country is going to elections so that it can choose which political path it considers best for Portugal,” and stressed that “the published statistics clearly show that the socialist solution is exhausted.”

Finally, he said that we are going through “very difficult times with very tense conversations” and that it is necessary to tell the Portuguese that “there is a path of hope and trust between the fact that there is fear, which some use as a political weapon, and anger, which others also use as a political weapon.”

“IL understands that concrete measures and a discourse of hope and trust are needed, which is not always contested, what is this constant conflict, this constant disbelief, fear on the one hand, anger on the other, let’s talk about trust and In the future we are confident We can achieve much more than we are doing now for everyone, and especially for the youth of this country,” he emphasized.

After a day that began at the zero kilometer of the National Bandstand 2 (EN2) in Chaves, Rui Rocha took part in the conference of the Youth Academy in Vila Real, an initiative that challenges the civic participation of young people from the interior.
