In a statement, ASAE said that, through its southern regional unit, it carried out this Friday “an inspection of a treatment center with a storage facility for live bivalve molluscs” in the municipality of Palmela, Setúbal district.

During the action, it was established that “the economic operator received live bivalve molluscs from local shellfish harvesters without having the appropriate license issued by the competent authority,” which is mandatory for “sending the product to the distribution network,” it is explained. in the note.

“The seafood was transported on family vehicles without any accompanying registration or tracking documentation and was unloaded on site using forklifts designed to receive goods,” ASAE confirmed.

As a result, in the case, “4446.5 kilograms of live bivalve mollusks were seized,” almost all of which were mollusks, “with an approximate value of 23,000 euros,” and “due to the impossibility of tracking, proceedings were initiated for the corresponding administrative offense.” live bivalve mollusks, “as well as the lack of metrological control of weighing equipment.”

ASAE assured that it will “continue to develop inspection activities within its mandate throughout the country in favor of healthy and fair competition among economic operators” and “to ensure food safety and public health for consumers.”
