In February 2023, a Braga court in that city sentenced a man who attacked his ex-partner with at least 19 stab wounds to nine years and eight months in prison.
In Friday’s ruling, which Lusa had access to this Saturday, the court emphasizes that the crime was committed while the victim was accompanied by one of her children, who was only two years old.
The accused, now 24 years old, was found guilty of attempted murder and domestic violence, in this case due to the physical and psychological abuse he inflicted on the victim over the five months he lived with her.
“The defendant acted with extreme violence and cruelty,” the decision says.
According to the court, the defendant initially acted out of an inability to accept the fact that the victim did not want to have children with him, and at the second stage – because she did not agree to renew the relationship.
The attempted murder dates back to February 13, 2023, the day the defendant, “furious” at his ex-partner’s “rejection,” went to a commercial store to buy a kitchen knife measuring 18 centimeters long and with a 7.5 blade.
He then went to his ex-partner’s house, waited for her to come out and “immediately began striking her several times in the stomach, torso and arms.”
With her two-year-old son on her lap, the woman still managed to run out into the street and ask for help, and members of the public helped her.
Brought to the hospital in hemorrhagic shock, she underwent several surgeries, spent the first few days in a coma and about a week in intensive care before being admitted to hospital. He was discharged on March 13, 2023.
“The incident created a concrete and real danger to the life of the victim,” the court stated.
The crime of domestic violence refers to a period when the accused and the victim lived together.
The court said that the defendant began to show jealousy, quarrels ensued, cases of pushing and assault with a hose were recorded at the company where they both worked, and on one occasion the defendant even threw the victim’s head into the sink.
The victim decided to leave the house, but the abuse continued, including punches, death threats and insults, in this case via text messages.
The defendant also gained access to his ex-partner’s email account and changed his password, now controlling all communications.
“The defendant wanted to physically and mentally mistreat the injured party, with whom he maintained a relationship equivalent to that of husband and wife, often in the presence of her minor children, expecting and wanting to provoke panic attacks and feelings of instability. the victim has sadness, humiliation, shame, fear and the trauma and pain she suffered,” the resolution says.
He adds that the defendant “also began a prolonged, persistent and intrusive stalking that caused the victim anguish and fear.”
At trial, the defendant admitted to “a sufficient portion” of the facts, but denied any intent to commit murder.
In addition to the nine years and eight months’ imprisonment, the court also imposed on the Brazilian-born defendant an additional sanction of deportation from Portugal for a period of eight years.
The defendant will also have to pay the Braga hospital more than 31 thousand euros for expenses related to the treatment of the victim.
