Depression Irene will cause strong winds and rain on the continent and Madeira

According to the IPMA, a new depression “Irene” will determine the weather in mainland Portugal and the autonomous region of Madeira with strong winds, intense rain and rough seas until the end of the 17th.

In a statement, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) said the depression, although it did not directly affect mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago, “the associated frontal system will shape the weather in these areas.”

From Tuesday evening, “the rain will be persistent, may be heavy at times and accompanied by thunderstorms until the end of the 17th on the Portuguese mainland, especially in the northern and central regions,” it adds in a note.

From Tuesday morning the wind will increase, blowing strongly on the coast in some places with gusts of up to 75 km/h, and in the highlands with gusts of up to 85 km/h, and this situation may last until the end of May. On the 17th, the note also states that there will also be increased seas on Wednesday as well as Thursday the 18th, with south-westerly waves of 4 to 5 meters high along the entire coast.

IPMA therefore emphasizes that “yellow level warnings for precipitation, maximum gusts and seas have already been issued.”

The Madeira Archipelago will experience periods of rain or showers, sometimes heavy, from Monday onwards, especially in the south and in the highlands of Madeira Island on Tuesday.

Winds will increase on the 16th, blowing from a strong southwesterly direction, gusting up to 85 km/h, and strong to very strong in the highlands, gusting up to 100 km/h, the report said.

The increase in sea conditions will also be significant, with waves in the western quadrant ranging from 4 to 5 meters on both days.

In this autonomous region, warnings have already been issued about precipitation, maximum gusts of wind and yellow seas.

The Azores archipelago will not be directly affected by the aforementioned depression.
