Police use football matches to protest

Some 220 police at the Barreiros stadium (Madeira) and another 400 at the Leiria stadium have used football as an arena for protests that have been going on for a week, repeating Friday’s action in Portimao.

At the Municipal Stadium of Leiria, during the game Unian Leiria – Santa Clara of the II Football League, members of GNR and PSP sang the national anthem in the 25th minute.

The protest, similar to the one that occurred on January 12 during the Portimonense-Farense I Football League game, is part of a wave of protest that began after the government approved the payment of a player’s career travel allowance on November 29. .

The lack of equal treatment of the remaining security forces has caused several police protests in recent days in several cities across the country, in an initiative that began with a PSP agent in front of the Assembly of the Republic in Lisbon and continues to this day. mobilizing more and more members of the PSP, as well as the GNR and prison guards.

These protests arose spontaneously and were not organized by any trade union, despite the existence of a platform consisting of seven PSP trade unions and four National Republican Guard associations created to demand a review of salary allowances for security forces.

This platform decided to completely sever ties with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The protests, which police promise to support until their demands are met, are organized through social media such as Facebook and Telegram.
