An earthquake measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale occurred on the island of Terceira.

An earthquake of magnitude 2.4 on the Richter scale was felt this Monday on the island of Terceira, the Azores Center for Seismic Volcanic Information and Observation (CIVISA) reported.

According to CIVISA, the earthquake was felt at 00:37 local time (01:37 in Lisbon), and its epicenter was approximately five kilometers south-southwest (SSW) of Altares, in the municipality of Terceira, Angra do Heroismo province .

“According to the information currently available, the earthquake was felt with a maximum intensity of III/IV (modified Mercalli scale) in the parishes of Serreta, Raminho and Altares (municipality of Angra do Heroísmo) and in the parish of Biscoitos (municipality of Praia). yes Vitoria),” states the CIVISA statement.

This event was also felt with force III in the parish of Quattro Ribeiras in the municipality of Praia da Vitória.

The earthquake “is part of the ongoing seismovolcanic crisis on the island of Terceira since June 2022.”

On Sunday, CIVISA recorded three more earthquakes on the island of Terceira.

The first had a magnitude of 4.5 and a maximum intensity of VI. It was felt on the islands of Terceira and São Jorge at 07:19 local time (08:19 in Lisbon), with the epicenter located approximately one kilometer north-northwest (NNW) of Serreta.

Two other aftershocks with magnitudes 2.4 and 2.7 on the Richter scale were felt at 16:46 local time (17:46 in Lisbon) and at 16:47 local time (17:47 in Lisbon).

On the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified by magnitude into micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), weak (4.0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), medium (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0- 8.9), exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (when above 10).

The Modified Mercalli Scale measures “degree of intensity and corresponding description.”

At intensity III, considered weak, the shock is felt inside the house and hanging objects sway, feeling “vibrations similar to those caused by the passage of heavy vehicles,” the Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) said on its website.

At intensity IV, considered moderate, parked cars shake, windows, doors, and utensils shake, “glasses and utensils rattle or clank,” and walls or woodwork may creak.

According to the IPMA, at intensity VI, considered severe enough, the shaking is “felt by everyone” and “trees and bushes shake visibly or a corresponding noise is heard.”
