Cruises break records at Lisbon port in 2023

In a statement, the Port of Lisbon emphasized that in 2023, records were broken for cruise activity in this port, namely the number of passengers, which amounted to 758,328 people, which is 54% more than in 2022.

The previous record dates back to 2018, when there were 577,603 cruise passengers.

The “return” segment, cruises embarking and/or disembarking at the Lisbon cruise terminal, was the most prominent, with exponential growth, with a total of 204,004 passengers (102,680 embarked and 101,324 disembarked), an increase of 131% last year. last year.

The number of transit passengers reached 554,324 people, which is 37% more than in 2022, the port of Lisbon emphasized.

According to the Port of Lisbon, cruise activities had a direct economic impact on the city of more than 83 million euros, with 102,680 passengers boarding and 554,324 passengers in transit in Lisbon, as a passenger on board spends an average of 367 euros. and a transit passenger €82, according to an economic impact study carried out by the Lisbon Port Authority (conducted by Netsonda and Nova SBE).

The port of Lisbon made 347 stops, 20 more than in 2022, while turnaround calls also registered a new record (107), “exceeding the absolute maximum of 103 stops recorded during the same period last year.”

In terms of origin of passengers, the UK is in first place with 38% (286,305), followed by the US, which has registered an increase of 116% compared to 2022 and currently accounts for 20% of passengers from cruises (149,233 ).

Passengers from Germany with 15% of cruise passengers (despite an increase of 14% compared to the previous year) are in third place, and passengers from Canada with 34,085 passengers (+172%) and a market share of 4%. , in fourth place.

The return voyage segment is led by US passengers boarding and disembarking at the port of Lisbon, increasing from 28,355 in 2022 to 86,124 in 2023 (an increase of 204%).

24 ships chose the port of Lisbon for their first stop, and four of them passed through Lisbon on their maiden voyage.

Interestingly, the most environmentally friendly cruise ship to date, Silver Nova, which has hybrid energy sources and achieves zero harmful emissions in the port, called in Lisbon on its maiden voyage, the port of Lisbon said, highlighting that the cruise sector is committed to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

By 2026, it is planned that several ports, including Lisbon, will supply electricity to berthed cruise ships in a bid to eliminate all port CO2 emissions.
