The number of players betting on online games in Portugal has grown to almost four million

According to the report, the number of players in Portugal grew in the third quarter of 2023 to almost four million, indicating an increase of 57 million euros in online gaming revenue compared to the same period in 2022.

A report from the Gambling Regulatory and Inspection Service (SRIJ), which analyzes gaming activity in Portugal, shows that in the third quarter of 2023, the number of player registrations amounted to 3,923.5 thousand across 17 operating organizations, an increase of 2.8%. than in the previous quarter, as a result of 205.2 thousand new registrations and cancellations of 97.8 thousand player registrations.

According to the document, between July and September last year, online gaming and betting activities generated approximately 215.3 million euros in gross revenue, an increase of 9.4 million euros compared to the previous quarter.

“This value is the result of an increase of 11.5 million euros observed in gambling (plus 9.4%) and a decrease of 2.1 million euros in gross wagering revenue from sports betting (minus 2.5%),” says a document published on the NIIZH website.

Compared to the same period in 2022, gross revenue increased by €57 million (36%) as a result of the growth seen in both gambling and odds-on sports betting (€44.8 million and €12.3 million, respectively ).

During the analyzed period, the value of gambling bets amounted to EUR 3,646.7 million, an increase of 47.2% compared to the same period in 2022 and an increase of 12.5% ​​compared to the second quarter of 2023.

Bets on machine games make up 82.3% of the total number of bets in online gambling.

In terms of new player registrations, the report found that 81.6% of them were under 45 years of age, of which 32.5% were between 18 and 24 years of age.

The districts of Porto and Lisbon have the highest concentration of players (21.2% and 20.7% respectively), followed by the districts of Braga, Setubal and Aveiro, which account for 25% of the total number of registered players.

As of September 30, 2023, in all operating entities, 196.6 thousand player registrations were self-excluded from online gambling and betting (15 thousand more than as of June 30, 2023), which is explained by self-exclusion of 35.6 thousand player registrations and termination of self-exclusion 20.6 thousand.

The ratio of self-exclusions to player registrations at the end of Q3 2023 was 5.0%.

Regarding gambling activities carried out in casinos, slot machines and bingo halls, the report indicates that in the third quarter of 2023, gross income from them was approximately 76.1 million euros, an increase of 14% compared to the previous quarter . an increase of 7.8% compared to the same period in 2022.

According to the document, this growth was “largely contributed by the increase in bank gambling and slot gambling, which accounted for 23.64% and 75.12% respectively, representing about 98.76% of the total gross income.”

Since the entry into force of the Legal Regime for Online Gaming and Betting on June 29, 2015, until September 30, 2023, 1,172 notices to cease operations have been issued to illegal online gambling operators in Portugal (23 in the third quarter of 2023). ) and notified network service intermediaries to block 1,590 websites belonging to illegal operators (84 in the quarter under review), the document said.

In total, 26 applications were submitted to the prosecutor’s office with the aim of initiating a criminal case (one for the reporting quarter).
