Augusto Santos Silva may continue to serve as President of the Assembly of the Republic

The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, on Tuesday expressed his readiness to continue his post after the legislative elections, but stressed that this continuity depends on the decision of his party and voters.

“My logic is very simple: in 2022 I accepted a job until 2026. Therefore, I see no reason to refuse it now,” said Augusto Santos Silva, speaking to journalists after participating in a journalism initiative within the framework of the V Congress of Journalists.

However, Santos Silva stressed that there is a “set of variables” that will determine who becomes the next president of parliament, including his own will, the decision of his party, as well as the “electorate.”

“The determining will here is really the will of the voters, and we have to be very humble now because it’s about influence first and then respecting the will of the voters,” he said.

Asked if he feared that the process of drawing up lists of parliamentary candidates in the PS could become the object of internal criticism, especially from the councils, as happened in the PSD, Santos Silva replied that he “does not have the slightest doubt that this is the case ” will be a completely peaceful process.”

“The PS is not a party that carries out purges and settles scores. There is no such logic in the PS, since once formed the parliamentary panel is all facing north, and the next moment it turns completely towards the East. All cardinal directions are allowed and integrated into the PS,” he noted.

According to Santos Silva, the reason for this is the fact that the debate on the dispute over the leadership of the PS has already taken place.

“This debate is over, leadership is now everyone’s leadership. We are all united and determined to win the next election,” he said.

Asked whether he thought parties should discuss international politics more on the campaign trail after Ukraine’s president asked for more international support at Davos on Tuesday, Santos Silva said he didn’t think so.

The President of Parliament noted that election campaigns are moments when parties seek to “celebrate differences.”

“It appears that there are more similarities than differences between the two main parties vying for victory in the next elections in terms of international politics. It is therefore natural that international politics is not one of the strong points of the election campaign. ” , He said.

Regarding Ukraine, Santos Silva said that “there is not the slightest doubt” that Portugal and all its sovereign bodies are united in supporting the country.
